Melmac is an old-school Psilocybe cubensis genetic from the original Penis Envy family, historically associated with the Homestead Book Company. Recognized for its gnarled stems, irregular wavy caps, and unmistakably unconventional morphology, Melmac was also the highest-potency genetic in Lady Hyphae’s current internal test results.
Product Description
Melmac—also encountered historically as Melmak or Homestead Penis Envy—is a distinctive Psilocybe cubensis variety descended from early Penis Envy genetics.
Its history reaches back to the Homestead era of the late twentieth century, when Penis Envy genetics were being preserved and selectively worked into increasingly recognizable forms. Melmac emerged as an unusual expression characterized by thick, contorted stems and broad golden-brown caps that can become irregular, wavy, or dramatically upturned at maturity.
Rather than the compact cap-and-stem proportions associated with classic Penis Envy, Melmac often looks twisted, exaggerated, and almost alien.
The genetic also stands out within the Lady Hyphae collection for another reason: in our internal analytical testing, Melmac produced the highest potency result among the genetics tested in our current stock
About this strain
Melmac belongs to the historic Penis Envy family of Psilocybe cubensis genetics and is strongly associated with the Homestead Book Company, which circulated early Penis Envy material during the late twentieth century. It is consequently still referred to as Homestead Penis Envy in some mycology collections.
Its morphology separates it visually from more conventional PE expressions. Melmac can produce thick, distorted or gnarled stems beneath broad golden caps with irregular, wavy, and sometimes dramatically upturned margins.
The name is widely believed to reference Melmac, the fictional home planet of ALF from the 1980s television series—an unusually appropriate name for a mushroom with such alien-looking morphology.
Melmac remains pigmented rather than albino or leucistic and can produce conventionally pigmented P. cubensis spores. As a member of the Penis Envy family, sporulation may be less visually prolific than in many traditional cubensis varieties, making its reproductive characteristics another interesting point of comparison under microscopy.
