Product Description

Mazatapec is a heritage Psilocybe cubensis variety associated with the Mazatec region of Oaxaca, Mexico—a region with an extraordinary history of Indigenous knowledge surrounding psychoactive fungi.

The genetic retains classic cubensis morphology, typically producing warm caramel, chestnut, or golden-brown caps with pale stems and blue bruising where tissue is damaged. Its spores are conventionally pigmented for P. cubensis, appearing dark purple-brown when deposited in mass.

The history of the modern Mazatapec genetic should be distinguished from the much older mushroom traditions of the Mazatec people. Numerous psychoactive mushroom species have been documented within Mazatec ethnomycology, and the modern variety carrying the Mazatapec name represents only one small piece of that much larger history.

Strain spotlight

About this strain

Mazatapec is a Psilocybe cubensis variety whose name refers to the Mazatec people and region of Oaxaca, Mexico.

The Sierra Mazateca became internationally important to modern ethnomycology during the twentieth century as researchers documented the continued ceremonial use of several psychoactive mushroom species within Mazatec communities. That tradition long predates the modern circulation of a cubensis genetic called Mazatapec.

Mazatapec itself displays traditional P. cubensis characteristics, including golden-to-brown caps, pale stems, blue bruising, and dark purple-brown spores.

Rather than presenting the genetic as the source of Mazatec mushroom traditions, it is more accurate to understand it as a geographically associated cubensis line carrying a name connected to a region with an extraordinarily rich—and much broader—mycological history.
