King Oyster Isolated Spore Syringe – 10cc

$20.00

King Oyster (Pleurotus eryngii) is a distinctive gourmet species recognized for its exceptionally thick, meaty stem and relatively small tan-to-brown cap. Unlike the clustered, fan-shaped growth of many familiar oyster mushrooms, King Oyster develops a substantial central stem that gives the species its characteristic “king” appearance.

Product Description

King Oyster, or Pleurotus eryngii, is one of the largest and most distinctive members of the oyster mushroom group. Its morphology is almost the reverse of what many people expect from an oyster mushroom: instead of a broad cap supported by a short lateral stem, King Oyster produces a thick, dense central stem topped by a comparatively small tan, gray-brown, or brown cap.

The pale gills extend downward along the upper portion of the stem, preserving the decurrent gill structure characteristic of Pleurotus. Its reproductive material is light-colored, with smooth, hyaline basidiospores that appear essentially colorless individually under transmitted-light microscopy.

King Oyster is also ecologically unusual. Wild P. eryngii occurs throughout parts of Europe, North Africa, and Asia and is strongly associated with plants in the Apiaceae family, including Eryngium species—the relationship that ultimately gave the mushroom its scientific name.

Culinarily, King Oyster is prized for its unusually firm, substantial texture. Both the cap and the massive stem are edible, with the stem providing much of the mushroom’s characteristic density and versatility.

From its unusual proportions to its plant associations and microscopic reproductive structures, King Oyster shows just how diverse the genus Pleurotus can become.

Strain spotlight

About this strain

King Oyster is the gourmet species Pleurotus eryngii, a member of the same genus as familiar oyster mushrooms but with a dramatically different appearance and ecology.

Its defining feature is its stem. King Oyster develops a thick, fleshy, centrally positioned stipe supporting a smaller rounded cap that ranges from tan and gray-brown to deeper brown. Pale gills descend from the underside of the cap onto the upper stem.

Its spores are light-colored in mass and hyaline under transmitted-light microscopy. Like other members of Pleurotus, the basidiospores are smooth and elongated rather than heavily pigmented or ornamented.
In the wild, P. eryngii is particularly associated with the roots and dead tissues of herbaceous plants in the Apiaceae family. This unusual ecological relationship separates it from the image of oyster mushrooms simply growing from hardwood logs.

King Oyster may share a genus with Blue Oyster, but put the two side by side and they demonstrate just how much morphology can change within a single fungal lineage.
